I remember reading up on this and how the "black screen" became a Hollywood staple in movie magic. How they changed to white and then blue screen which revolutionized Hollywood for years. Like the black screen the blue screen is quickly fading in favor of the green screen as like you mentioned easier to work with. Funny cause even after 130 years Hollywood is still in it's infancy and growing rapidly.

I'm one of the cynical dudes that complain about CGI and want the old simpler times back. Yeah, there were green screen before, but it was difficult as hell to be performed and so films had to keep things more simple, or make huge set pieces what would be great too and with CGI you can do basically everything and that means that if everything can be done more or less easily, so everything amounts to nothing. Also films are very reliant on it, on CGI spetacle and they are kind of forgetting how to tell good stories, I kind of agree with Scorsese when he said that Marvel movies aren't and in a more traditional sense they kind of aren't, they are rollercoaster rides.

Honestly I agree with him in his closing statement. Since the beginning of film making we strived to create a world of fantasy and story telling, without special effects we are just limited to our real world, and if you want that then just watch a play but even then they too use some form of special effects to make magic happen on the stage.

To make the Great train Roberi in 1903, I would just have built sets with no roof :D Light problem fixed ^^

I'm gonna feel so grateful using 'chroma key' from now on. Few clicks are all it takes for us to key out now a days, being able to do that is such a blessing.

Man, it wasn't even 20th century when that film came out. Imagine how many people got their minds blown by seeing a man just get his head off as if it was a Lego piece right in front of a camera

I think it’s fair to say that most people who complain about the reliance on CGI in modern films are talking about how it has replaced practical special effects and in-camera effects. I’ve never heard anyone complain about improvements in keying, quite the opposite.

It's also worth noting that pretty much any wide release film today that uses green/blue screen just uses that as a starting point. They also create frame-by-frame rotoscoped mattes to achieve those perfect cutouts. An automatic chroma key might be good enough for the weatherman, but not for features.

Green and blue were chosen become its the opposite color ( on color wheel)of skin, thus its easier to edit, due to that difference. Anyone who worked with chroma keying, knows that colors that are close to subject’s color, get affected a lot more then the colors that are opposite on color wheel.
