And where it leaves war-torn Nagorno-Karabakh. Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia. For more than 30 years, it's been locked in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fight between the two countries began in the early 20th century but became a frozen conflict for 60 years while the whole region was under the control of the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union fell, newfound independence sparked a brutal six-year war in the region, where Armenia emerged victorious. From 1994 to 2020, Armenia controlled Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan rebuilt its military. Fighting erupted again in summer 2020, and Azerbaijan went on the offensive — eventually capturing most of Nagorno-Karabakh and dramatically reshaping the region. Armenia calls clashes with Azerbaijan over disputed Nagorno region ‘a declaration of war’ | DW News

Armenia and Azerbaijan have accused each other of reigniting their decades-long conflict in the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh after fresh violence erupted in the breakaway region. The two sides resumed open conflict again on Monday morning with the use of heavy artillery. Outbreaks of violence had continued through the night, according to the Armenian Defense Ministry spokesperson Shushan Stepanyan. Armenian forces reportedly attacked the town of Terter with heavy artillery, according to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense. The worst violence in the region since 2016 has raised the prospect of a new war in an area that has been simmering for decades. At least 31 people — both civilians and military — have died in fighting that erupted on Sunday between Azerbaijani forces and Armenian rebels in the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, officials said. Separatists reported 15 further military casualties on Monday morning. Both Baku and Yerevan also reported civilian casualties, as did the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in a televised address that Azerbaijan's "authoritarian regime has once again declared war on the Armenian people." Both countries declared martial law. The president of Azerbaijan declared a partial military mobilization in the country as part of a presidential decree on Monday morning. Armenia began a general mobilization on Sunday. Pashinyan also spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Putin expressing "serious concern" over the escalation. Russia maintains a military base in Armenia, and is seen as an ally to Yerevan. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan are former Soviet republics. Turkey, meanwhile, is considered an ally of Azerbaijan, and has been vociferously criticizing the Armenian government. Armenians flee Nagorno-Karabakh after brutal war with Azerbaijan: ‘This will not break us’

In some surrendered areas in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenian villagers like Martinios have five days to pack and leave before Azeri forces arrive. The district where he lives, Kalbajar, was given up by Armenia as part of a ceasefire deal, which brought a brutal six-week war with Azerbaijan to an end. War here has been generational, and in the 1990s it was the Azeris who fled these villages in a ceasefire handover. Martinios himself moved here soon after to escape the persecution against Armenians in Azerbaijan. Now that peace has been brokered, and after decades of bitterness and mutual distrust, can he bear to leave behind the home he built? In October and November 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan went to war over Nagorno-Karabakh - a region more usually known in Armenia as Artsakh. After 44 days, Russia brokered a ceasefire that brought an end to fighting; but not before Azerbaijani forces had managed to retake a large amount of territory that had previously been under Armenian control. So, one year after the war, how do people in Armenia view the conflict? And where do they see things going in future? Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Here I take an informed look at International Relations with a focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries. If you like what you see, please do subscribe. If you want more, including exclusive content and benefits, consider becoming a channel member. Many thanks! SUBSCRIBE FOR FREE 🤍 BECOME A MEMBER 🤍 As the Soviet Union collapsed, the predominantly Armenian-inhabited territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, an autonomous province of Azerbaijan, declared independence. This in turn led to a bitter war between Armenia and Azerbaijan that saw Armenian troops take control of almost 15 percent of Azerbaijan's territory. In the years that followed, unsuccessful efforts were made to broker a settlement between to two countries. As a result, the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh came to be seen as a 'frozen conflict'. However, in reality it was anything but frozen. Many observers expected a new war to emerge as Azerbaijan increased its military spending. In the end, full-scale fighting broke out in late-2020. Over the course of six weeks, Azerbaijani forces, acting with support from Turkey and Israel, retook large parts of the Armenian-held territory before Russia stepped in and brokered a ceasefire between the sides and placed Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh. By all accounts, the war was a major defeat for Armenia. But one year on from the conflict, how do people in Armenia view the situation. This video, which was filmed in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, takes a look at the conflict and its aftermath. The Nagorno-Karabakh-conflict involving Armenia, the unrecognised Republic of Artsakh and Azerbaijan has been described as one of many frozen conflicts worldwide. However, the latest developments of 2020 have demonstrated that the ice seems to have melted. In truth, the conflict was heading into the direction of escalation since at least 2016, as the ongoing peace process has yielded little to no results. This video is a simplified summary and analysis of what is going on in this conflict: How did the conflict about Karabakh start? What is it about? And which countries are involved? President Putin of Russia has called for an end to hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh region he said the fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia was a tragedy - while Iran warned it could escalate into a wider regional war. The current fighting is the worst seen since a war between Azeris and Armenians in the 1990s. Under international law the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan but it's populated and governed by ethnic Armenians. Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by international correspondent Orla Guerin from the city of Tartar in Azerbaijan. Please subscribe HERE 🤍

Azerbaijan's army said Friday it had entered the district of Agdham, an area of Azeri territory ceded by Armenia as part of a Russian-brokered peace deal to end the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. "Units of the Azerbaijan Army entered the Aghdam region on November 20," the Defense Ministry in Baku said, referring to one of three districts that will change hands over the next two weeks. The handover of Agdham, which was captured by Armenian forces in July 1993 during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, will be followed by the Kalbajar district, wedged between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, on November 25, and the Lachin district by December 1. Armenian forces and ethnic Armenian residents packed up and left the district over the past few days ahead of Friday's deadline, which was delayed from Sunday for humanitarian reasons. Most of the town of Agdham, however, was destroyed to discourage Azerbaijani residents from returning; it remains uninhabited. The latest conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh broke out in late September. The disputed region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan in law, but has been controlled by ethnic Armenians for the past 30 years. Thousands of people have been killed in 6-weeks of fighting and more than half of the region's 150,000 population was displaced. The warring parties, at odds over the territory since before the end of the Soviet Union, finally agreed to end hostilities last week under a Russian-brokered accord, made as Azerbaijan progressed rapidly in the combat. As part of last week's agreement, Armenia agreed to return some 15 to 20% of the Nagorno-Karabakh territory captured by Azerbaijan in recent fighting, including the historical town of Shusha. Just over a month ago, Armenia lost control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region in a short-lived and brutal war with Azerbaijan. But while Armenian forces have handed these territories back to Azerbaijan it may be a long time before civilians return to them safely, with hundreds of miles of frontline to de-mine and evidence of war crimes. Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia on Tuesday said they have signed a deal to end the military conflict over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. "I have signed a statement with the presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan on the termination of the Karabakh war," Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a statement posted to his Facebook page. He also called the move "unspeakably painful for me personally and for our people." Araiyak Harutyunyan, the leader of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, said on Facebook that he agreed "to end the war as soon as possible." Meanwhile, Armenian protesters angry over the agreement stormed the government headquarters in Yerevan, AFP news agency reported. Several thousand reportedly gathered outside the government building and a few hundred entered, ransacking offices and breaking windows. The declaration followed six weeks of heavy fighting and advancement by Azerbaijani forces. Azerbaijan said on Monday it had seized dozens more settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh, a day after declaring victory in the battle for its second-largest city. Azerbaijan says it has retaken much of the land in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, which it lost in a 1991-94 war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and forced many more from their homes. Several thousand people are feared killed in the conflict, and three ceasefires have failed in the past six weeks.
