The 1978 Brabham BT46 Fan Car and how it worked. The fan at the back of the car was claimed to be for the purpose of cooling the engine, but it also increased the downforce by a large percentage. This helped the car go around corners at a higher rate of speed while still stabilizing it. The car was unveiled at the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix. In qualifying, John Watson and Niki Lauda placed 2nd and 3rd behind rival Mario Andretti (driving for Louts) for the purpose of not drawing attention to the cars. At the start of the race, the two Brabham's fell behind a few places and on lap 20 Watson retired from the race due to a throttle problem, but Lauda had snuck back up into second place, battling with Andretti for the lead. Andretti made an error and let Lauda through to take the lead and eventually the win by a staggering 34.6 seconds. After complaints from other teams that the car was illegal, the FIA investigated the car but agreed that the fan was to be used to cool the engine down, thus deeming it legal. Bernie Ecclestone, team owner of Brabham at the time voluntarily took it out of the running, though, and without the fan on the car, Brabham finished third in the constructors championship behind Lotus and Ferrari. Formula 1 teams are constantly trying to innovate their vehicles to make sure they can get the upper hand against their rivals, and in the late 70s Brabham and Gordon Murray really thought outside the box to try and beat rivals Lotus, and the mythical Brabham BT46B "fan car" was born. As with all things though it was too good to last, and subsequently we don't see any cars today with giant fans strapped to the back of modern F1 cars... but why not? Jake Boxall-Legge takes a look at how the wacky idea was developed, how it worked, and how it was removed from the grid shortly after. #Banned Intro: (0:00) The Fan Car: (0:40) Equipping The Car With A Giant Fan: (3:12) The Fan Car Is Unleashed In Sweden: (5:29) FOLLOW us online: Website: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe!
🔧 Thanks to Scarbs for joining us once again! Go follow him on Twitter for F1 Tech news! 👉 🤍 Could you make Formula 1 racing better with the addition of Active Aerodynamics? We’re talking fan cars, active suspension, active wings - the lot. Because we have a sneaking suspicion that it could help cars run closer together, enable more overtaking and generally improve racing. So how would you do it? Could Formula 1 ever do it? Lets get into it. Now, its all well and good saying add all the toys (active aero, active suspension, fans, 3000 horsepower ect), and yes you could create something that is the peak of automotive technology. But it would be impossible to drive (as it likely would exceed what a human could process) and you DEFINITELY couldn’t race it. So we’re going to look at this with the idea to improve racing, and if we can make the cars a bit faster and show of automotive tech along the way - then great. So currently, aside for DRS, Formula 1 uses only passive aerodynamics. Passive does seem like a funny word for something so insanely complex - but the aero package (wing angles, brake cooling, rideheight and setup) are all locked in before the race. And the wings do deflect with load, but the aerodynamics aren’t ‘actively’ changing. This setup has positives. Its much simpler, makes the teams lock-in a setup and means the slipstream is pretty strong. As the wings create a lot of drag on the straight. But there is still the dirty air problem, its better now, but still there. These are all things that would change if Formula 1 were to implement active aero. This video details the design, build and testing of my Remote Control Fan Car inspired by the #f1 Brabham BT46b and the Chaparral 2J. It's based on a #Traxxas slash with 2 EDF fans that would be used in RC Jet Airplanes. This is just the initial testing needed before I move into a much higher power setup intended to use this downforce for a low 0 - 60 time. #STEM

Gordon Murray is making a successor to the McLaren F1 and it looks to pack some serious punch. A 650bhp naturally-aspirated V12, a manual gearbox and a £2.5 million price tag. But wait, there’s more – the T.50 supercar is set to be a fan car, the first ever to take to the road. That’s the same technology that created a ridiculous amount of downforce in Murray’s Brabham fan car of the ‘70s, so it’s crazy to think that a road car will be using the same engineering in the near future. Nevermind a big rear wing, a fan could potentially create a hell of a lot of downforce. Mike explains how a fan car works and what we can expect from the T.50 supercar. The full documentary is here: 🤍 Some more clips from older documentarties are here: 🤍 From the original BBC description: "It's 1978 and the world of F1 is gathered at Anderstorp for the Swedish Grand Prix. Bernie Ecclestone's Brabham team is causing a commotion in the pit lane with its new car. Brabham's brilliant young designer Gordon Murray has stuck an eighteen inch diameter fan on the back of the car ostensibly to cool the engine, but with the crucial side effect of sucking the car to the road. As Murray recalls; 'The Fan Car went round hairpin bends as fast as 150 mph bends. It had a massive advantage.' Brabham's rivals, from Colin Chapman and Mario Andretti to Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson, are outraged but the Fan Car races on." Source: 🤍

There's a new Goodwood Hill RECORD. After 23 years Nick Heidfeld's Timed Shootout record in the McLaren MP4/13 has been broken. F1 and IndyCar star Max Chilton's new 39.08 second run in the incredible McMurtry Speirling fan car has knocked over two seconds off that time. It's also taken the Outright Hill record from the Volkswagen ID.R. Romain Dumas' time of 39.9 seconds was smashed earlier in the day in practice, and a further 0.1 seconds in the Timed Shootout. The small car—it's only 3.5 meters (137.8 inches) long, 1.7 m (66.9 in) wide, and 1.1 m (43.3 in) tall—is capable of sprinting from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 1.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h), capped due to hillclimb gearbox selection. What's more, the Spéirling sports 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds) of instant downforce, more than what a Formula 1 car is capable of generating at speeds up to 150 mph (241 km/h), but with significantly less drag. Compared to the demonstrator car that made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year, the McMurtry Spéirling record-breaking car went through an intensive program of prototyping and testing. A lot of time was dedicated to the unique fan-powered downforce system, which enables it to generate more than double its own weight in downforce. Unlike conventional vehicles, the Spéirling's downforce is available at all speeds as it does not rely on airflow over the car. It may look like Kinder’s started popping toy Batmobiles in its eggs, but this dinky device apparently beats a Chiron to 186mph – with turbines in place of a rear wing. The stats on the prototype are promising, and daft – think around 1,000kg, and around 1,000 electrically powered horses to move it. Gordon Murray blew the world away in the 1990s when he designed the McLaren F1, and now he's back with a brand new hypercar that uses a very similar recipe, apart from one vital ingredient. The GMA T.50 is a V12, manual, carbon fibre hypercar that uses a ground-effect fan to create more downforce than any road car before. Valkyrie, step aside, Professor Murray looks to have pulled a blinder with this £2.5 million weapon. Slideshow of the stages of the build of my BT46B brabham Fan Car. I have completed this model recently and it took approx. 145 hours work in total. The biggest challenge was the ultra thick decals (they really were a nightmare...) and metalised parts which causes issues with adhesion and painting. Overall though, a nice kit that went together quite well (just watch the side skirts, - they have totally wrong location points). Hope you like the results and thanks for watching!
