In honor of Conservation Officer Appreciation Day, annually recognized on March 15, you will meet a Grand Rapids man and his family who were helped by a conservation officer after a life-threatening chainsaw accident near Pentwater Lake in Oceana County. Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are sworn law enforcement officers through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards who protect Michigan’s natural resources and the environment, as well as the health and safety of the public through effective law enforcement and education. Conservation officers live in the counties they patrol as embedded members of their communities, and are equipped with patrol trucks, boats, ORVs, snowmobiles and more, so they can quickly respond to life-threatening, general criminal and search and rescue events where time is of the essence. During Week 15 of the DNR Conservation Officer Training Academy, recruits completed water safety training, including some time in an ice bath. "This training teaches the recruit how his or her body will respond if they fall through the ice into the water," said DNR Recruit School Commander Sgt. Jay Person. "We work on a lot of frozen surfaces, and there is always a risk of falling through. This training was important because it helps recruits understand what happens to their motor skills in ice-cold water." With emergency medical technicians on hand and monitoring each recruits' vital signs while sitting in the ice bath, the DNR instructors evaluated fine motor skills and the recruit's condition. Two years ago I got a picture of a mountain lion on a trail camera on our property. I sent it to the MI DNR and they told me it was a bobcat. Well, either we have some MONSTER bobcats roaming our woods or here's some MORE proof of mountain lion activity in Northern Lower MI! 🤍BPHomestead on FB

The start of deer season is on the doorstep, with preparations already underway. In addition to the usual list of requirements and licenses, this year, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has introduced a new way to record harvests. Starting with the fall 2022 deer seasons, online harvest reporting is required for all hunters who successfully take a deer. Last year, nearly 7,000 deer hunters voluntarily reported their harvest online to help test the new reporting system.
